Christchurch is currently bustling with construction sites as work continues to rebuild the city following the major earthquakes that struck in 2010 and 2011.

There is still a lot more work to do and there are many local and international developers and businesses involved in rebuilding Christchurch by purchasing, constructing or refurbishing property in the central city. At the end of 2014, over 9000 building consents were issued in Christchurch city, totalling $2.6 billion.

All the construction and planned developments add excitement to the city as it is revitalized and rejuvenated for a brighter future.

Ngai Tahu rebuild plans

A $150 million-plus office and apartment complex around the central square will be built to replace Christchurch’s old police headquarters and King Edward barracks.

Future potential stages could include two further smaller office buildings and 65 to 80 apartments facing Montreal St, but construction of these stages will be subject to market demand.

With up to four commercial buildings, walkways, carpark building and row of apartments, the development will take up the entire riverside block between Hereford, Cashel and Montreal St and Cambridge Tce. Hawkins has been awarded the contract to build the first stage of the project, consisting of two five-story office buildings and a public square. Construction is scheduled to begin in September. The first office buildings are expected to be finished by early 2017. At the peak of the development, between 500 and 600 construction workers are expected to be onsite.

Health Precinct

The Health Precinct integrates first-class healthcare with research, education and innovation. Representatives from the Canterbury District Health Board, University of Otago, University of Canterbury and Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology are working together to develop the Precinct, which will incorporate health services alongside cutting edge research and teaching facilities. The redevelopment of Christchurch Hospital will include a new acute services building, additional operating theatres, purpose-designed spaces for children, an expanded intensive care unit, a radiology department and a new emergency department. Initial CDHB development construction began in April 2015, which will carry through until late 2016. Public realm stage one construction is due to commence late 2015.

The Crossing

A glossy $140 million precinct called The Crossing is the latest big development, in the heart of central Christchurch. The precinct will include shops, offices, cafes, bars and carparking around a network of laneways and airbridges. Construction has recently started, and the precinct will occupy new and heritage buildings on over a hectare of land between Cashel, Colombo, Lichfield and High streets. It is due to open in October next year.

Innovation Precinct

Work has begun on the $50 million McKenzie and Willis development in Christchurch’s Innovation Precinct. The new building will house around 100 Wynyard research and development, and software engineering staff and will support the rapid and ongoing growth of those teams. Wynyard has signed a long-term lease and will be the biggest anchor tenant to occupy the new building. On the southern corner of Tuam and High streets, the state-of-the-art three level building will comprise ground floor retail and hospitality areas and two levels of office space. Work is has commenced and is scheduled for completion in late 2016.
